'Cloche' is a French word meaning 'Bell' (The modern
gardener has expanded the original meaning of the word cloche to
also mean 'tunnel covering'). 'Bell Jar' cloches were used by gardeners in the Victorian era and were
originally made from hand blown glass. The glass bell cloches are very heavy, expensive and easily
breakable!
The 'Victorian Bell Garden Cloches' are made from high quality plastic, but have a glass like appearance.
The Bell Cloche is versatile, lightweight, durable and robust, and
works in exactly the same way as the far less practical glass version,
providing decorative and effective protection for all types of plants
that will last for many seasons. Bell Cloches can be used for warming
soil prior to sowing seeds and planting out. They encourage stable
